Crash kills trapped driver

An unidentified 49-year-old man was killed Monday afternoon, May 4, after he was trapped inside a vehicle that caught fire in a crash on Rt. 167, Brooklyn Twp.

State Police, Gibson and the Susquehanna County Coroner’s office is continuing to investigate. The name of the man is being withheld pending an autopsy.

Susquehanna County Coroner Anthony Conarton said an autopsy will be scheduled for later this week.

A passenger in the vehicle, Garret Spear, 25, of Binghamton, N.Y., was injured in the crash. Police said he was not wearing a seatbelt.

The crash occurred at about 1:45 p.m.

According to police, the vehicle was traveling south on the roadway when the driver failed to negotiate a left hand curve. The vehicle hit a parked car and then struck a tree.

The driver was trapped inside the vehicle as it caught on fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner.

Spear was transported by ambulance to Endless Mountains Health Systems, Montrose, for treatment of his injuries.

Hop Bottom Fire, United Fire Co. and the Montrose Minute Men and Kozlowski Towing assisted at the scene.
