Fritz winner in 111th GOP race

BY STACI WILSON

Unofficial primary results show Wayne County Commissioner Jonathan Fritz as the winner of the three-way 111th District race on the Republican ballot.
Fritz, along with Susquehanna County Commissioner Alan Hall and former state house rep Jerry Birmelin, looked to fill the seat of the retiring Rep. Sandra Major.

No candidate appeared on the Democratic ticket, but a write-in could move forward to the November ballot.

Portions of Susquehanna and Wayne counties are included in the 111th District.

Fritz garnered 2,752 votes in Wayne County and 1,720 in Susquehanna for a total of 4,472.

Birmelin brought in 1,692 votes in Wayne County and nearly matched that number in Susquehanna County with 1,671 for a total of 3,363 votes.

Hall carried Susquehanna County with 2,991 votes, but fell short in Wayne, with 265, for a total of 3,256.

Just over 48 percent of eligible Susquehanna County voters cast ballots in the election; with a 59% Republican turnout and a nearly 45% Democratic voter turnout.

In the presidential race, frontrunners Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump won the county, as well as the state.

In Susquehanna County, Clinton garnered 1,680 votes to Bernie Sanders’ 1,602.

Trump received 5,027 votes in the county, more than double the 2,061 received by Ted Cruz. John Kasich trailed with 1,040 votes. Three candidates on the ballot but no longer in the race – Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, and Ben Carson – earned a combined total vote of 167 in the county.

In the statewide race for the U.S. Senate seat, Pat Toomey was unopposed on the GOP ballot; and Katie McGinty carried both the county and the state on the Democratic ballot.

In the race for Attorney General, Joshua Shapiro garnered the most votes on the Democratic ballot in the county and the state; while on the Republican ballot Joseph Peters of Wyoming County took the county vote but lost in the statewide race to John Rafferty Jr.
