High speed chase leads to arrest

BY STACI WILSON

A Binghamton, N.Y., man faces charges following a police chase that exceeded 90 mph Thursday across the state line and ended in New Milford Twp.

Jesse Alan Cook, 32, is accused of stealing vehicle from a shopping plaza in Binghamton.

Binghamton Police and New York State Police notified Pennsylvania State Police, Gibson, that they were pursuing the stolen vehicle on I-81 south, near the state line at about 5:40 p.m.

Cook entered Pennsylvania and continued south on the highway with troopers from PSP, Gibson in pursuit with sirens and lights activated. Stop sticks were deployed at about milemarker 228 and the vehicle sustained two flat tires, both on the drivers’ side, but the driver kept on going.

The vehicle eventually got off the highway at exit 223, New Milford, where it was pinned in by troopers. According to police, Cook attempted to swerve into the grass and back onto the highway but struck a marked patrol car.

Cook was then taken into custody. No injuries resulted from the pursuit.

Cook was charged with receiving stolen property, fleeing and eluding, and several vehicle code violations. He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Jeffrey Hollister bail was set at $300,000 and he was remanded to the Susquehanna County Correctional Facility.

Cook waived his preliminary hearing Monday in New Milford District Court.

It’s the second police pursuit on Interstate 81 in recent weeks. On Dec. 27, police say Christopher Vroman of New Milford topped 100 mph in an attempt to elude law enforcement after he failed to pull over for a traffic stop.

Vroman traveled north into New York where he crashed his vehicle near Exit 3 in Binghamton.

Vroman was taken into custody in New York, and will be brought back to Susquehanna County to face charges.
