The Montrose Lady Meteors Track team is made up of two historically good relay teams. The 4×100 relay team took first place in the Jordan Relays on May 1, where they also took wins in the 1200 meter medley and the 1600 relay.

The Lady Meteors were favored to win the 4×100 relay for the second straight year at the District track meet held at Scranton High School on Tuesday, May 13. The relay is run by Becca Timm, Myra Lattimore, Meghan Gilhool, and Allison Lewis. Going into the race with a team record of 50.7 seconds, the girls were confident, but knew they faced some tough competition and winning wasn’t a sure thing.

Later on that night they would run a second relay, the 1600m, this time with Emma Griffiths running in place of Gilhool. The girls were looking to capture their third straight District win in the event.

Just prior to the start of the 4×100, Lewis took an individual win in the 400m with a time of 59.17. She had to recover quickly and be ready to anchor her team on the final stretch of the relay.

Timm took the first 100 meters and had a great start. There was a little bobble in the hand off to Lattimore, but the baton was not dropped and Lattimore gained on the leaders from Meyers High School. The handoff to Gilhool was smooth, but the runners from Meyers were pulling ahead. The race came down to the final leg with flawless baton handoff to Lewis on the straightaway, Lewis ran as hard as she could, but the team from Meyers was able to cross the finish line a .85 seconds ahead of the Lady Meteors for the win with a time of 50 seconds even.

A couple of hours later the girls were ready to run the 1600 meter relay, with each runner going 400 meters, or one time around the track. This time there was no stopping the Lady Meteors who claimed their third championship in a row in this event and earned a chance to compete in the State Track Meet in Shippensburg on May 23-24.

The team of Timm, Griffiths, Lattimore, and Lewis won the relay with a time of 4:05.40 beating the second place team, Lakeland by just over six seconds who finished with a time of 4:11.41.

Gilhool and Griffiths both have another year of high school next year, but the other three relay runners will graduate and head off to different parts of the country to pursue their college goals.

Timm is planning on attending a military academy in Missouri where she will study history and agriculture. Lewis will attend Westchester University to major in elementary education and compete as a runner. Lattimore, who is ranked number one in her class academically, will attend Georgia Tech, study aerospace engineering, and play basketball.

The ladies from Montrose all started track in 7th grade because their friends were doing it and found out that they really liked it.

The exception is Lewis, who readily admits that she joined the track team because she loves to run. Gilhool and Lattimore also play soccer and basketball. Griffiths also plays soccer.

Gihool and Griffiths will be returning to run for the Lady Meteors next year hope to continue the winning tradition.
