Montrose lowers taxes one mill

BY STACI WILSON

Property owners in Montrose Borough will see their tax bills reduced in 2014.

Borough council adopted the 2014 tax ordinance at the Monday, Dec. 2 meeting, lowering the millage for the upcoming year from 13 to 12 mills.

Council also approved the 2014 borough budget of $1.245 million.

Councilman Sean Granahan said there were no significant increases or decreases to any of the borough departments.

Meeting dates for 2014 were also set. Council will continue to meet on the first Monday of every month at 7 p.m., and the third Monday of every month, as needed, at 7:30 p.m.

The September meeting conflicts with the Labor Day holiday and will be held on the following Monday.

Council approved its annual agreement with United Fire Company.

The fire company had also submitted a financial audit for the borough to review along with the contract.

Lillian Senko was hired as the borough secretary. Her starting date was not set at the meeting.

The borough plans to look at other banking options but does not plan to make any changes until the new year.

An executive session was held to discuss both personnel and real estate but no item came up for a vote following the closed door session.
