Hunters Sharing the Harvest gets Cabot support

Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation is partnering this year with Hunters Sharing the Harvest, a non-profit venison donation program for hunters who share their extra venison through a statewide network of participating butchers to food banks across Pennsylvania.

This cooperative program is being offered to the company’s 250-plus employees including Gas Search Drilling Services (GDS) a wholly owned subsidiary of Cabot.

“Cabot understands the value of Hunters Sharing the Harvest and so, this year we want to help by making it easier for our employees to support this worthwhile cause to feed the hungry in Northeastern PA.” said George Stark, Director, External Affairs at Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation.

The PA deer hunting season starts Monday and this additional support is sure to help achieve the annual goal of the HSH mission. Each year the program works to channel 100,000 pounds of processed venison from the fields to the food banks.

Through this partnership, Cabot will sponsor the cost of butchering a donated deer for its employees in Susquehanna and Wyoming counties.

Cabot employee-venison donations will be redistributed to local food banks and food assistance providers in the northeast region by way of HSH volunteers Jim Holbert, Susquehanna county coordinator (570)934-2625 and Bill Sordoni, Wyoming County coordinator (570)592-4300.

They will assist with the collection and distribution of the donated meat from the butcher to the food banks including the Weinberg NEPA Regional Food bank. Located in Wilkes Barre, the Weinberg Food bank provides food assistance to faith-based and 501©3 non-profit organizations for distribution to needy families serving four counties in NEPA: Susquehanna, Wyoming, Luzerne, and Lackawanna counties.

HSH participating butchers include:
-Scavazzo’s Deer Processing, 600 Valley Road, Montrose (570) 553-2703 (Susquehanna)
-Wrights Cut-Up Deer Processing, 154 Dietz Mt. Road, Monroe, Twp. (570) 333-4616 (Wyoming)
-Dave’s Custom Deer Processing, 584 Cigarski Road, Shavertown (570)696-1546 (Luzerne)
-LaCoe’s Custom Butcher Shop, Rts. 6 & 11, LaPlume (570)945-5716 (Lackawanna)
-Country Butcher Shop 220 Oak Road, Drums (570)788-3044 (Luzerne)
-Naugle’s Deer Processing 1522 State Rt. 29, Hunlock Creek (570)477-2051(Luzerne)

Since 1991 Hunters Sharing the Harvest has coordinated the processing and distribution of donated deer from hunters to hungry people throughout the state.

It has come to be the signature mechanism for helping those individuals and families in need by providing extra or unwanted venison to the more than 21 regional food banks in Pennsylvania.

“An average-size deer will provide enough highly nutritious and low cholesterol meat for 200 meals. But it costs us on average $55 per deer for processing.” said John Plowman, executive director of the HSH program. “It is through the generous support of businesses like Cabot that makes this program work.” We are excited to have Cabot work with us via this initiative to support not only the community they serve but its own employees.”

By underwriting the processing cost of each employee-donated deer, Cabot helps HSH increase the amount of donated and processed deer in an area that otherwise would see a smaller result.
