The “hills were alive,” not with the Sound of Music but with 250 members of the Scranton Stake of The Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints wearing yellow vests.
They were all willing to spend the day in the Tri-Boro area as part of a Mormon Helping Hand Service Project cleaning up and beautifying areas in Oakland Borough and Lanesboro. The Scranton Stake goes as far south as Easton and takes in Nazareth, Stroudsburg, Honesdale, Tunkhannock, Wilkes-Barre, Montrose and Susquehanna.
The church members and 40 missionaries assigned to the Stake arrived early Saturday, Oct. 26, and spent the day painting picnic tables in Luciana Park (the color selected by the town fathers was “Saber Blue”); cleaning up, trimming shrubs, and spreading mulch in the Lanesboro Community Park; cleaning up the State Street area of Oakland Borough.
LDS coordinator for this project was Lynn Kay Brown who worked with Oakland Borough Secretary Flo Bush and Lanesboro council members to make for a successful project.
Local businesses donated supplies (like the Saber Blue paint) and food for the hungry crew.
