The Pennsylvania Director of “Hunters Sharing the Harvest,” John Plowman, recently appointed Jim Holbert of Montrose as Susquehanna County Coordinator.

Hunters Sharing the Harvest is a charitable program that utilizes extra venison from local hunters to benefit needy families. Local butchers who participate in the HSH program are compensated for their services as they work with local organizations to coordinate venison distribution to those in need.

“Since 1991, the Hunter’s Sharing the Harvest venison donation program has coordinated the processing and distribution of donated wild game from hunters and municipal herd reduction sources to hungry people throughout Pennsylvania,” the organization states on their webpage. “An average-sized deer will provide enough highly-nutritious, low-cholesterol meat for 200 meals.”

“More than 1.3 million Pennsylvanians are classified as living beneath the lowest-income poverty level, with the recent economy downturn only escalating the need and requests for food assistance,” explains Plowman. “In Susquehanna County, where so many individuals enjoy the sport of deer hunting, this program has the potential to do a world of good.”

Jim Holbert will be coordinating the program for Susquehanna County by teaming up with local butchers and organizations such as QDMA (The Quality Deer Management Association) to make venison available to local food banks.
