Montrose Area junior David Maxey took his graduation project seriously.

And he found a project that meant something to him, as he put together a benefit golf tournament for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

He did the tournament in honor of Niall Hibbard, his cousin’s child, and ended up raising $7,206.72 for the foundation at his tournament held on April 27 at Tall Pines Golf Course.

There were more than 100 competitors on 26 teams competing in the tournament, with Markie June’s team winning the men’s division and Craig Reimel’s team won the mixed division.

“It felt good knowing that I was going to be able to help kids,” Maxey, 17, said on Thursday. “
Maxey said he would like to thank everyone who had a part in making his project a success.

In addition to the $7,207.72 check, Kohl’s Department Store has pledged $500 to go directly to the foundation.

Capozello said on Thursday that she was grateful for Maxey’s efforts.

“It’s amazing to me that you could raise over $7,000 in a golf tournament,” Capozello said.

In addition to the golf tournament, there was a silent auction on April 27 with signed albums from United Artists and sports memorabilia including a football signed by Boomer Esiason.
