Blue Ridge’s Zach Edwards wrestled back from a quarterfinal loss to make it to the third place bout at the Class AA Northeast Regional wrestling tournament in Williamsport on Saturday.
However, Edwards (138) fell short of a bid to states as he took a 4-2 decision loss to Williamsport’s Trevor McWhorter in the third place bout.
Teammate Dalton Hogle (120) was the only local wrestler to win his quarterfinal match on Friday as he topped Central Columbia’s Lewis Williams, pinning him in 1:43.
Keeping his cool, sophomore Hogle worked out of trouble and into the Class AA Northeast Regional Wrestling semifinals.
Hogle was in a difficult spot as Williams had him on his back early in their bout. But Hogle used a hip heist maneuver to get the reversal that led to the pin.
“He’s like a Gumby,” Blue Ridge coach Zach Edwards said. “He can get out of tough situations like that.”
Hogle lost in his semifinal match against Hughesville’s Zach Fry in 3:53 to join Edwards in the consolation bracket.
However, Hogle was eliminated with a loss to Montgomery’s Kobe Galentine, 3-0, in the consolation semis.
Edwards won his consolation semifinal by pinning Central Columbia’s Jesse Shannon in 3:58.
Elk Lake’s Isaiah Ofalt (182) opened regionals with a quarterfinal loss as he was pinned by Canton’s Garrett Wesneski in 3;24.
Ofalt was then eliminated as he lost his consolation quarterfinal match, 4-2, to Wyalusing’s Justin Griffith.
Montrose’s John Shaffer Jr. (285) was also eliminated with a pair of losses, first to Central Columbia’s Alex Shiber, 7-2, and then to Lake-Lehman’s Dustin Jones, 7-2.
