Habitat breaks ground for new home

Dolores Foster (center), president of Habitat for Humanity of Susquehanna County, along with board members Phil Titus, John Kernan, Pat Schneyer and Rich Henry hold a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the group’s next build on South Main St., Montrose.

Habitat for Humanity of Susquehanna County broke ground Saturday at the site of the next home building project in Montrose.

President Dolores Foster said, “Not only are we breaking ground for a new home, we are also taking the first step to make a dream come true for a family.”

She offered the group’s thanks to the family who “has a strong belief in what Habitat is doing and allowed us to purchase the property at an affordable price.”

Following excavation of the lower South Main St. site, construction of the three-bedroom, one bath, ranch-style home should be completed in a few months time, Foster said.

This will be the first panelize house build Habitat has worked on in the county.

Once the site is ready, “everything should be under roof in five days,” Foster said.

Enrollment for prospective families is open until May 26. Anyone wanting information or an application is urged to call the Habitat office at 278-4102.

In April, the local chapter dedicated a new home on Bowen St., in Montrose.

The house is now the home of Cheryl Arnold and her family who were presented with a Bible and the spade used in the groundbreaking ceremony held at the site in August 2008.

The Bowen St. home was built by volunteers, along with students from the Susquehanna County Career and Technology Center at Elk Lake. The home was completed in 2009.

The Arnold family will also be helping in the construction of the South Main St. home this summer.
