{"id":212,"date":"2010-08-04T18:14:38","date_gmt":"2010-08-04T18:14:38","guid":{"rendered":"1.922208"},"modified":"2010-09-02T17:53:32","modified_gmt":"2010-09-02T17:53:32","slug":"tonkin-stays-hot-at-penncan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenstreetdata.com\/PS\/2010\/08\/04\/tonkin-stays-hot-at-penncan\/","title":{"rendered":"Tonkin stays hot at PennCan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\">Brett Tonkin of Carbondale crept back into title contention with a strong win in the modified division at Penn Can Speedway on Gary&#8217;s U-Pull-It Legends Night.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\"> <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\">In the late model main event Tracy Gregory got his car out front early and drove to another win. Jon Carpenter became a first time feature winner in the Hornbeck Chevrolet crate sportsman division with Butch Green winning the S&#038;W Awards street stock feature. Andy Brighan won another feature race at the speedway in the four cylinder division. In the special Northeast Vintage Modified feature former track champion Lynn Highhouse thrill the crowd with his win.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\"> <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\">Garth Tonkin took command of the 30-lap modified feature jumping from his pole starting position to the lead over Bobby Gunther Walsh, Brett Tonkin and Joey Colsten. Tonkin held the top spot early only to be pressured and final past by his brother on lap six. The first and only caution came on lap seven for a spin in turn three that sent the top running car of Mike Schane&#8217;s to the rear of the field.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\"> <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\">With the racing intense throughout the field Tonkin held command at the half way mark over Mike Decker, Joey Grammes, and point leader Mike Gular with Tonkin, Colsten, Kevin Bates, and Dan Pompey moving to the front. While the top four battled lap after lap positions behind were changing every lap for positions behind the leader. Mike Schane was the man on the move coming from deep in the pack into contention. Tonkin held his line as the race wound down taking his third win of 2010. He was followed across by Decker, Grammes, Gular, Garth Tonkin, and Schane.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\"> <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\">Steven Deinhart and Curt Tunilo led the late models to the green with Deinhardt jumping to the front. Tracy Gregory used the outside groove to pick cars off lap after lap and moved into the lead early in the feature and held on to win the twenty five lap feature event. Dave Zona, Deinhardt, Ben Whitaker and Jim O&#8217;Hara rounded out the top five.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\"> <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\">The Hornbeck Chevrolet crate sportsman feature saw Wes Campbell jump out to the early led in the 20-lap feature event. With Campell leading Jon Carpenter and Grant Hilfiger moved into contention. Carpenter and Cambell raced side by side for the top spot through the middle stages of the event with Carpenter taking the top spot at the halfway point of the race. Carpenter then had to hold off challenges from Hilfiger, Adam MacGeorge, and newcomer Jim Hausworth. When the checkered flag flew former street stock competitor Carpenter had his first win as a crate sportsman driver. MacGeorge, Hilfiger, Hausworth, and Mike Nagel followed.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\"> <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\">The 25-lap street stock race was another exciting with very few cautions. Ken Sparks and Shane Wolf Jr. were the early leaders with Butch Green taking the top spot on a lap eight restart. Green built up a nice lead over Wolf Jr. and Shane Wolf Sr. only to have the caution come out on lap twenty setting up a 5-lap dash. The man on the move was newcomer Cody Decker who raced his way into the second spot for the restart. Green and Decker would then battle over the last five circuits with Green holding off the challenges of Decker to record the victory. Decker , Wolf Jr., Wolf Sr., and Kenny Sparks finished behind Green at the flag.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\"> <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\">Andy Brigham, Joe Warren, and Lance Albanese put on a great racing show in the four cylinders with Brigham claiming his four win of the 2010 season.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\"> <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\">Former track champion Lynn Highhouse brough out his vintage modified for the first time in 2010 and thrilled the hometown crowd with the win in the 15-lap feature event.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\"> <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\">PENN NOTES: This Friday evening the speedway will feature Kiddie rides at the intermission break.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\"> <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\">Another date to remember is the Hot Summer Night Race of Champions special scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 10. This will be the second Brett Deyo co-promoted event at the speedway. The first event in June drew a stellar field of modifieds and this event will do the same. Danny Johnson, Stewart Friesen, Duane Howard, and Pat Ward are locked in a tight point battle for the ROC Championship.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\"> <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 10.5pt;\">The late models and crate sportsman are also on the card.
