Television personality and founder and CEO of the mikeroweWORKS foundation, Mike Rowe speaks with SCCTC students after the Workforce Summit about SkillsUSA National Competition.<\/p><\/div>\n

Six Susquehanna County Career & Technology Center students recently attended the PA Chamber Foundation Workforce Summit held in Hershey. They were the guests of Daria Fish, Director of Public Affairs at Chief Oil & Gas.<\/p>\n

The summit focused on pairing business and industry needs with a skilled workforce.<\/p>\n

Commonwealth employers reported difficulty filling open positions ranging from administrative to technical\/skilled trades, who noted that they just can\u2019t find employees with adequate skills, training and education.<\/p>\n

A 2016 survey reported that 52 percent of employers say recruiting qualified candidates is very difficult. Companies that are shown to be successful are the ones that supported partnerships, programs and workforce development initiatives.<\/p>\n

The featured speaker of the day was Mike Rowe of Discovery channel\u2019s \u201cDirty Jobs.\u201d Rowe spoke about the country\u2019s dysfunctional relationship with work and the widening skills gap.<\/p>\n

He challenged the belief that a four-year degree is automatically the best path to take. He is the CEO of the mikeroweWORKS Foundation, a non-profit charity which awards scholarships to qualified individuals who want to master a skilled trade.<\/p>\n

After the conference, Rowe took some time to speak with the group about the upcoming SkillsUSA National Competition where several SCCTC state gold medalists students will be competing.<\/p>\n
