Blue Ridge Theatre brings \u201cLittle Shop of Horrors\u201d to the stage this weekend with shows on Saturday, April 23 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 24 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the door. With distinct turn from Broadway musical classics like \u201cCinderella,\u201d \u201cAnnie\u201d and \u201cThe Sound of Music,\u201d the Blue Ridge High School Theatre is bringing the 1980s comedy, sci-fi, horror-spoof \u201cLittle Shop of Horrors,\u201d to the stage this weekend.<\/p>\n

The musical is by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a show I\u2019ve wanted to do for a long time,\u201d said Amy Zakarauskas, high school chorus teacher and director of the musical. \u201cAs much as the students love Rodgers & Hammerstein and more traditional shows, they were ready to something more modern and mature.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senior Lexi Button said, \u201cI\u2019m excited for everyone to come see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Button appears as \u2018Chiffon\u2019 one of the three members of the 1960s Motown inspired doo-wop trio that provide narration and commentary throughout the show. Senior Janelle Oakley appears as \u2018Crystal,\u2019 and sophomore Sequoia Marriott as \u2018Ronette\u2019 round out the trio.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the best cast show I\u2019ve ever done,\u201d Zakarauskas said.<\/p>\n

Hunter Renwick, a sophomore, plays \u2018Seymour,\u2019 a down-on-his-luck, hapless plant enthusiast in a failing flower shop on Skid Row. He discovers a \u201cstrange and unusual plant\u201d and brings it back to the shop.<\/p>\n

Seymour is in love with Audrey (Skylar Secord) who also works at the flower shop and he names the plant after her, \u201cAudrey Two.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite Seymour\u2019s affection, Audrey is in a relationship with a dentist, Dr. Orin Scrivello \u2013 the black leather-clad jacket bad guy in the show \u2013 played by Spencer Renwick.<\/p>\n

\u201cBad characters are fun to play,\u201d Spencer Renwick said.<\/p>\n

Marriott counts the \u201cdentist scenes\u201d as her favorites in the show. \u201cIt\u2019s good,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The plant brings customers to Mushnik\u2019s Skid Row Florists, owned by Mr. Mushnik (Zach Morris) but Audrey Two grows sickly. It\u2019s then Seymour discovers the plant feeds on human blood.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t think I would get a part like Seymour,\u201d Renwick said. \u201cIt\u2019s a nice change. I\u2019ve had to step out of my comfort zone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The plants used in the production were rented from Musical Theatre International, Zakarauskas said. There are four plants, at various stages of growth, all manipulated by puppeteers.<\/p>\n

A donation from a community member allowed for the elaborate sets, costumes and the plant rental for the production. \u201cWe\u2019re so lucky and thankful for that,\u201d Zakarauskas said.<\/p>\n

Familiar songs in the show include, \u201cDowntown (Skid Row),\u201d \u201cSuddenly Seymour,\u201d and \u201cSomewhere That\u2019s Green.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLittle Shop of Horrors\u201d will be performed on Saturday, April 23, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 24, at 2 p.m.<\/p>\n
