The state attorney general on Monday filed 22 criminal charges against former Mid Valley School District Superintendent James Tallarico.<\/p>\n

The charges, which include theft by unlawful taking, theft by deception, official oppression and forgery, were filed at Magisterial District Judge John P. Pesota\u2019s office. The magistrate\u2019s office would not provide a copy of the criminal complaint because a judge has not signed it. His preliminary arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday at 9 a.m., said Jeffrey Johnson, a spokesman for the attorney general\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

An online docket lists the charges but does not include details on the investigator\u2019s probable cause. The attorney general\u2019s office, through Mr. Johnson, also declined to provide a copy of Mr. Tallarico\u2019s criminal complaint until his arraignment in Lackawanna County Central Court.<\/p>\n

Attempts to reach Mr. Tallarico and his attorney, listed on the docket as Gerard M. Karam, were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n

Mr. Tallarico, 55, abruptly resigned as superintendent by email in February, citing \u201cpersonal reasons.\u201d He was the Montrose Junior\/Senior High School principal until he became the Mid Valley\u2019s superintendent on Jan. 1, 2014.<\/p>\n

Though the docket provides little detail, it does list Throop as the municipality where the offenses occurred. The Mid Valley School District covers Throop, Dickson City and Olyphant.<\/p>\n

The Mid Valley School Board initiated the investigation, board president Gerard Luchansky said Monday. The district has no comment about the charges at this time, he said.<\/p>\n

Mid Valley Solicitor Donald Dolan said district staff members and its business consultant, Albert B. Melone Co., discovered \u201cirregularities.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey did an internal investigation and confirmed what they believe to be improper activity,\u201d Mr. Dolan said. \u201cIt was then brought to the board of school directors\u2019 attention who immediately turned it over to law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Dolan would not discuss specific details.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe district at this point in time is reserved on its comments,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Attempts to reach officials from Albert B. Melone Co. were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n

An investigation has not been launched in the Montrose Area School District, said Superintendent Carol Boyce. She was not aware of the charges when contacted Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n

After Mr. Tallarico\u2019s resignation, Gene Camoni, Ed.D., took over as acting superintendent for the remainder of the 2014-15 school year. Directors appointed Patrick Sheehan, former assistant superintendent at Western Wayne, as the district\u2019s full-time superintendent on July 1.<\/p>\n
