The condition of state roads in the county brought elected officials, agencies and organizations to the table for a meeting Friday, May 30.<\/p>\n

But one key player in the discussion was missing.<\/p>\n

PennDOT.<\/p>\n

It was noted that invited representatives from the state agency had scheduling conflicts on the meeting date and were unable to attend.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Alan Hall said, \u201cThe first problem is that this meeting was not important enough for PennDOT to come to. It\u2019s been on the books for over a month.\u201d<\/p>\n

The meeting, hosted by the Susquehanna County Farm Bureau, brought together County Commissioners Hall and MaryAnn Warren, along with Tom Yonisky of Sen. Lisa Baker\u2019s office, Debra Valunas of Rep. Sandra Major\u2019s office, several township supervisors, and representatives from Northern Tier Regional Planning & Development Commission.<\/p>\n

The attendees noted a long list of problems happening on state roadways in the county \u2013 including new work that is not holding up; drainage problems not being addressed; and a lack of communication from PennDOT.<\/p>\n

Hall said he was traveling on SR 167 from Hop Bottom to Bridgewater Twp. when he came to a construction zone that shut down the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t notify the county \u2013 not 911, not EMA (emergency management) \u2013 and there were no postings. That\u2019s a safety issue,\u201d Hall said.<\/p>\n

Valunas said a large number of complaints have also come into Rep. Major\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

Jessup Twp. Supervisor Dennis Bunnell said, \u201cWe can\u2019t get them to talk to us, somehow we need to get to Harrisburg.\u201d<\/p>\n

After listening to a long list of concerns and complaints, Yoniski boiled the issues down into areas the local representatives could begin to address and suggested a bullet-point list be drafted highlighting some of the main concerns.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will follow up for you,\u201d Yoniski said. \u201cIf we need to set up a meeting (with PennDOT), we\u2019ll set up a meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I don\u2019t like about what I\u2019m hearing is the quality,\u201d Yoniski said. \u201cDoing it to do it is not acceptable\u201d as he referenced a bridge replacement project that was completed last year. Hall reported that chunks of concrete were falling off of the new bridge.<\/p>\n

The group also discussed the need to address the actual work specifications.<\/p>\n

Hall said, \u201cEveryone follows the specs \u2013 you can\u2019t say its poor workmanship when it\u2019s the specs. The specs they put out are what\u2019s driving this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will cost more money to do it right,\u201d Hall said, \u201cbut it will last longer.\u201d<\/p>\n
