Blue Ridge<\/strong>
\nBasketball is a big part of Ty Herbert\u2019s life. He is getting ready for the upcoming season and has earned a starting spot on the varsity squad.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been looking forward to this season for a while,\u201d Herbert said. \u201cI honestly think we have a good chance of winning the division this year. We only lost one guy from last year, so we pretty much have our whole team back this year.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the fall and the spring, Herbert plays AAU basketball. He also helps out in mid-January with the Blue Ridge Basketball Club, teaching the sport to kids in grades kindergarten through fifth.<\/p>\n

\u201cCoach Button really likes us to go there and help out and kind of set an example for the little kids,\u201d Herbert said. \u201cIt\u2019s really fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Off the court, Herbert is a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions and is applying for the National Honor Society. He also is in chorus and has qualified for the upcoming district competition in January.<\/p>\n

While he isn\u2019t sure what college he wants to attend, Herbert said he would like to study either sports management or medical engineering. Naturally, basketball spawned his interest in both fields.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had an injury a while ago, and the process I had to go through to fix it was interesting,\u201d Herbert said. \u201cIt was just a dislocated finger, but it was cool seeing my hand on the X-ray.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elk Lake<\/strong>
\nZach Groover was supposed to split time in goal this season but when the other goalie decided to focus on cross country, the net belonged to the sophomore.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was nervous being a sophomore against juniors and seniors,\u201d Groover said. \u201cBut my coach was really helpful. He gave me a lot of confidence and I was able to get through the season.\u201d<\/p>\n

Groover also plays indoor soccer at Riverfront Sports and said the game is played at a different speed indoors.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a smaller field, so the game is a lot more fast-paced,\u201d he said. \u201cKids are ripping shots from half-field. I\u2019m probably seeing 30 or more shots in a game. It\u2019s definitely giving me a lot of practice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Forest City<\/strong>
\nSenior Madison McGraw has been a member of the girls soccer and basketball teams and is a co-captain for both this year.<\/p>\n

As a junior, she earned first-team all-stars. She played in Saturday\u2019s UNICO soccer game at the University of Scranton.<\/p>\n

Off the playing fields, she is involved in Student Council, National Honor Society and yearbook staff, where she is the co-sports editor.<\/p>\n

Montrose<\/strong>
\nAs winter sports season approaches, junior Katie Warner is gearing up for the basketball season.<\/p>\n

Warner has been playing basketball since fifth grade, and while she\u2019s more than adapted to that schedule, she\u2019s now learning to balance school, basketball and her senior project of job shadowing a physical therapist with the professionals at ProCare in Montrose.<\/p>\n

\u201cSchool and basketball are my first priority at the moment,\u201d Warner said. \u201cWhenever I have free time, I try to get to ProCare to put in some hours for my project.\u201d<\/p>\n

Warner looks forward to the upcoming basketball season and learning as much as she can about physical therapy from the therapists at ProCare.<\/p>\n

Mountain View<\/strong>
\nSophomore Abby Mecca just wants to have a voice.<\/p>\n

The manager of the boys soccer and baseball teams will get her chance as a Region D representative of student government.<\/p>\n

Mecca will be the speaker when her school represents Region D at a number of conferences that start in January.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of kids don\u2019t have the chance to have their say,\u201d Mecca said. \u201cI am so thrilled to have the chance to speak for the schools.\u201d<\/p>\n

There were four schools in the running to represent Region D, with Mountain View ultimately winning out.
\nMecca then was named the team representative.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be fine as long as I can keep myself calm,\u201d she joked when asked about being nervous.<\/p>\n

Susquehanna<\/strong>
\nAfter qualifying for the PIAA Cross Country Championships as a sophomore, Mikayla Hargett made it back to Hershey this year as a senior. She punched her ticket by placing 14th in 22:00 in the Class A race at the District 2 Championships. Then at the state meet, she finished 93rd out of 218 runners in Class A in 21:48.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince I had already gone once, I had some experience,\u201d Hargett said. \u201cI knew the course and was more confident. I did well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hargett is now getting ready for basketball. She said she believes the team has a lot of talent and potential and is primed to have a good season.<\/p>\n

Besides cross country and basketball, Hargett is also on the softball team. Off the field, she is enjoying her first year as a member of the Art Club.<\/p>\n

After graduation, Hargett would like to major in business. One of the schools she is interested in is West Chester University.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
