{"id":13334,"date":"2014-08-27T15:20:18","date_gmt":"2014-08-27T15:20:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/independentweekender.com\/?p=13334"},"modified":"2014-08-27T15:22:01","modified_gmt":"2014-08-27T15:22:01","slug":"value-added-pieces-key-to-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenstreetdata.com\/PS\/2014\/08\/27\/value-added-pieces-key-to-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Value-added pieces key to development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>BY STACI WILSON<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/independentweekender.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/WGSI_econdev_leatherstocking.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13336\" alt=\"WGSI_econdev_leatherstocking\" src=\"http:\/\/independentweekender.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/WGSI_econdev_leatherstocking-300x193.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/psowegomedia.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/WGSI_econdev_leatherstocking-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/psowegomedia.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/WGSI_econdev_leatherstocking-1024x659.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/psowegomedia.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/WGSI_econdev_leatherstocking.jpg 2436w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>This year has been a good one for economic development in Susquehanna County, Progress Authority Executive Director Anthony Ventello said at the annual breakfast meeting held Friday, Aug. 22.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to see investment in the region,\u201d Ventello said.<\/p>\n<p>Central to that investment is the development of the Marcellus Shale.<\/p>\n<p>Ventello said, \u201cWe\u2019re seeing unique business development opportunities in the county with its strategic location of the resource in proximity to the market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, the director of the economic arm of the county is looking to add value to that resource before it leaves the area. \u201cIt\u2019s very important to do that,\u201d Ventello said.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed the need to \u201cstrike a balance\u201d between shipping gas out of the county and capitalizing on the \u201cdownstream\u201d business opportunities that come with natural gas development.<\/p>\n<p>Those opportunities include local gas distribution \u2013 as Leatherstocking Gas Company is developing \u2013 as well as CNG, LNG and power generation.<\/p>\n<p>Ventello spoke about IMG\u2019s move to build power generation facility in Auburn Twp. \u201cIt\u2019s a $20 million investment locally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Scott Dunkleberger, Director of the Center for Business Financing with DCED was the guest speaker at the event.<\/p>\n<p>Dunkleberger said recent reports indicate that Marcellus Shale production hit an all-time high in July. \u201cTwenty-nine percent of that gas is from Susquehanna County,\u201d he said. \u201cThe five most productive wells are in this county.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe economy is changing,\u201d Dunkleberger said. \u201c(Natural gas development) can truly change Pennsylvania in a positive way if it is handled right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dunkleberger discussed the development of LNG and CNG, as well as fueling stations that would be accessible to the public.<\/p>\n<p>He also outlined areas where the county could take advantage of some of the funds available through the Marcellus Legacy Fund \u2013 a fund created by Act 13 to be used for flood mitigation, baseline water quality testing and recreation projects.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, 168 project proposals were submitted for funding in the state, including a project from the Rail-Trail Council and a project in Gibson Township, according to Dunkleberger.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the Rail-Trail and Clifford Twp. submitted applications which will be acted on in November, according to Dunkleberger.<\/p>\n<p>Also in the works in Susquehanna County is a feasibility study for the development of an industrial park, Ventello said.<\/p>\n<p>Leatherstocking was given the \u201cbusiness of the year\u201d award for its development and ongoing construction of a natural gas distribution system.
