\u201cTreasure the memories\u201d is the theme of agricultural fairs throughout the state this year. Directors of the 157th Harford Fair took time at opening ceremonies on Sunday evening to remember four people whose work on behalf of the fair helped others build memories to last a lifetime.<\/p>\n

Among those remembered were the late Phyllis Ridgeway, a secretary of the Harford Agriculture Society for 31 years; Hendrick Marr, a former director who wore many hats during his years with the Harford Fair; Joan Peters who served as assistant superintendent of the School Department for 20 years; and Virginia Wright, who served as superintendent of the goat department.<\/p>\n

Members of the Marr and Ridgeway families attended to receive the recognition and were introduced by Director Cindy Reynolds.<\/p>\n

Director Cindy Reynolds was recognized as the 2014 Outstanding Fair Director by Boots Hetherington, Pa. Dept. of Agriculture Fair Administrator.<\/p>\n

Reynolds is the first woman to serve as a director for the fair that has been a summer institution in Susquehanna County for the past 157 years. Over the years, she has also served as superintendent of the school building and anywhere else she was needed during the six-day event.<\/p>\n

State Representative Sandra Major, along with Senator Lisa Baker, received recognition for assisting in getting fair funds returned to the state budget this past year. The Harford Fair received $29,000 to be used for improvements to the grounds and other capital projects. The other 108 county fairs in the state also received funds from the state budget.<\/p>\n

Dr. Michael Kowalewski, president of the Harford Fair board of directors opened the ceremonies, welcoming everyone to the 157th Harford Fair, where they have a opportunity over six days \u201cto make memories that will last a lifetime.<\/p>\n

2013 Harford Fair Queen Taylor Watkins thanked the board and the Queen Committee for giving her an opportunity to \u201cmake memories.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pastor Ray Mitchell of the South New Milford Baptist Church gave the invocation and the colors were presented by members of Bravo Company, 109th Infantry assigned to the Pa. National Guard Readiness Center, New Milford. Director Jason Miller led the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem.
