The Montrose Legion 16 and under baseball team faced off against West Scranton for the first game in a best of three series on Thursday night at Montrose Area High School. Montrose fell to West Scranton, 4-3, in the series opener.<\/p>\n

The team is made up of players from Montrose and Elk Lake and is coached by Ed Dieck and Scott McAleer.<\/p>\n

The visiting team batted first and Montrose pitcher Chris Lee took the mound to pitch. The first batter for West Scranton, Griffin Conreiro, got on base with a single, stole second, and moved to third on a passed ball.<\/p>\n

Frank Worsrick had a great hit to centerfield but was out when Montrose centerfielder, Bryden Jerauld made the catch. Kyle Graham hit a sacrifice bunt and was thrown out at first when Lee\u2019s throw to first baseman Brendan Buck beat him for the second out. The sacrifice was worthwhile as he earned a RBI when Conreiro stole home for the first run of the game. The next batter, Kyle Polisham was hit by the pitch and advanced to second when Zach Beckwith hit a single.<\/p>\n

The third out was made when Cory Miller hit a line drive directly at Lee, who made the catch.<\/p>\n

Zach Dieck batted first for Montrose and was thrown out at first. Lee hit a single to get on base and stole second. Jerauld struck out and Lee was caught stealing third base for the third out to end the first inning with West Scranton up 1-0.<\/p>\n

The second inning started with Montrose shortstop Dieck, and Buck throwing Noah Worsrick out at first. Shayne Merrifield hit a single to get on base, but was caught stealing second when Montrose catcher, Jack Waldenburger threw down to second baseman, Andrew Rapisardi, who made the second out. Patrick Dougherty reached first base on an error and got to second base\u00a0 on a passed ball, which was the first of three errors in a row made by the Montrose team, which loaded the bases for West Scranton and enabled Dougherty to score the second run. Graham struck out looking for the third out.<\/p>\n

Buck was walked by West Scranton pitcher, Conreiro, but was tagged out at second with a fielder\u2019s choice when Waldenburger hit a single and safely got to first. Joe McAleer struck out and Rapisardi was thrown out at first to end the second inning with a score of West Scranton 2, Montrose 1.<\/p>\n

In the top of the third inning, Montrose started out with a double play after Polisham got a single to get on base and was followed by Beckwith who hit a line drive to the pitcher\u2019s mound which was caught by Lee who threw it to Buck and was able to tag out Polisham to complete the double play. Miller was able to get on base with a single and Noah Worshick moved him to third with a double hit. Merrifield struck out looking for the third out.<\/p>\n

Romey Washo was up to bat for Montrose. He hit a pop fly to second base which was caught by Dougherty for the first out. Cole Aukema was next at bat, but struck out.<\/p>\n

With the top of the batting order up, Montrose came back to fight. Dieck hit a single and stole second. He advanced to third with and error made by West Scranton catcher, Beckwith. Lee got on base with a walk. Jerauld got on base with an error by second baseman Dougherty which caused Jerauld to be hit in the nose with the ball. Timeout was called while coaches attended to Jerauld and he was able to return to second base. He earned two RBI\u2019s as Dieck and Lee scored runs to tie the game.<\/p>\n

Jerauld then stole third base. Buck kept the streak going by hitting a double and earning and RBI as Jerauld crossed home plate with the go-ahead run.
\nWaldenburger was thrown out at first for the third out. The third inning ended with Montrose up 3-2.<\/p>\n

Dougherty, was up first for West Scranton in the 4th inning. He hit the ball to Rapisardi at second who grabbed it and threw it to Buck at first for the out. Conreiro hit a single, stole second and third. He scored to tie the game after he tagged up when Frank Worsrick hit a ball deep to right field where it was caught by Washo for the second out. Graham struck out looking for the third out.<\/p>\n

Montrose went three up, three down when McAleer hit a fly to third, Rapisardi hit a pop up to first, and Washo struck out, using only 9 of Conreiro\u2019s pitches. The inning ended with a 3-3 tie.<\/p>\n

Neither team scored in the fifth inning. Dougherty came up first and reached base on an error. A pinch runner, Meyers, was put in for him after he got to first base. Conreiro hit a double and moved Meyers to third so two West Scranton runners were in scoring position. Frank Worsrick hit a ball to right field and again, Washo made the catch for the out. Graham had a single hit to get on base and earned the go-ahead RBI when Meyers ran home. Polisham also hit a single, followed by a strike out by Beckwith for the second out.<\/p>\n

Miller hit a pop up to second base where Rapisardi made the catch to end the inning with West Scranton up 4-3.
\nMontrose was unable to score during the sixth inning and neither team scored in the seventh and final inning. The game ended with a West Scranton 4-3 victory.<\/p>\n
