\nMontrose Area school directors adopted the district\u2019s $24,729,596 preliminary budget at Monday night\u2019s board meeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a bogus number,\u201d Board President Chris Caterson said, but added it was a starting point.<\/p>\n

Although school districts are required to adopt a preliminary budget in May, the state budget \u2013 which affects the district\u2019s bottom line \u2013 is usually not adopted until the end of June. Caterson said that at this point in the process, any raise or lowering of school taxes would depend on the final budget adopted by the state.<\/p>\n

The district has just over $70,000 in its 22 Capital Reserve Fund account \u2013 enough to cover the cost of the Lathrop Street Elementary conversion from oil heat to natural gas.<\/p>\n

Bids for general supplies, custodial supplies, refuse removal and fuel oil for the upcoming were also approved by the board.<\/p>\n

Joshua Rebello as appointed as an assistant football coach beginning with the 2014 season.<\/p>\n

Resignations were accepted from Jan Cechak, assistant football coach; Samantha Abbott, assistant varsity girls\u2019 basketball coach; and Sean Madden, varsity boys\u2019 basketball coach.<\/p>\n

The board also approved a memoranudum of agreement with the Montrose Education Support Professionals Association for summer work hours. Employees will work four, 10-hour days.<\/p>\n

Caterson said he thought that equaled a \u201cwin-win\u201d situation. The district would save on energy costs, he said, and employees would get a three-day weekend.<\/p>\n

The board also approved the creation of a full-time special education classroom at Lathrop Street Elementary beginning with the 2014-15 school term.<\/p>\n

During the work session held prior to the business meeting, the board recognized Ray Kroc Achievement Award recipient, Jerome \u201cRomey\u201d Washo. The annual award is presented by McDonald\u2019s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
