Mountain View coach Dave Breese was well aware of Western Wayne\u2019s 24-match Lackawanna League regular-season win streak.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah, because we took a couple of those beatings,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
That wasn\u2019t the case Tuesday (Apr. 22) evening.<\/p>\n
Austin Mack had 31 assists and Chad Schmidt had 13 kills to lead the Eagles to a 3-1 victory over Western Wayne, avenging a 3-2 defeat earlier this season and handing the Wildcats their first regular-season league loss in nearly two years.<\/p>\n
Their last loss had come April 30, 2012 at the hands of Lackawanna Trail.
\n\u201cThis was more of a team effort than any numbers could ever possibly represent,\u201d Breese said.<\/p>\n
In the first set, a Schmidt kill gave the Eagles a 19-12 lead, leading to a Western Wayne timeout. The Wildcats then went on a 9-3 run to cut the Eagles\u2019 lead to one. But Mountain View kept its composure and scored the next three points to win, 25-21.<\/p>\n
Western Wayne, however, controlled the second set. The Wildcats broke an 8-8 tie with an 11-4 run to give them a seven-point lead. Mountain View fought back to score the next five points and cut its deficit to 19-17. But Tyler Atcavage had three kills and Western Wayne scored six of the next seven points to win, 25-18, and tie the match.<\/p>\n
Like Western Wayne did in the second set, Mountain View used a big run in the third to seize control. The Eagles scored seven straight points to take a 17-7 lead and went on to win, 25-16.<\/p>\n
Mountain View then opened the fourth set by scoring the first seven points and seemed to be in control. Western Wayne didn\u2019t back down, fighting all the way back to tie the score at 23.<\/p>\n
On the next play, Patrick Miller, who led Western Wayne with 12 kills, came up with a huge spike to give his team a one-point lead and a chance at set-point. But Mountain View scored the next two points to take a one-point lead and give it a shot at match-point.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is huge, I credit all that to the teamwork,\u201d Schmidt said. \u201cWe were building each other up throughout the game. Other games we got down and that hurt us, (but) this game we were up. We worked together and got it done.\u201d<\/p>\n
