Now a registered nurse faces a host of charges.<\/p>\n<p>Lori Canfield, 28, Windsor, N.Y., waived her preliminary hearing Friday in New Milford District Court.<\/p>\n<p>Canfield was charged by Agent Robert Melnick, of the Bureau of Narcotics Investigations and Drug Control, Wilkes-Barre. She faces counts of acquiring or obtaining a controlled substance; refusal to keep records required; theft by deception \u2013 false impression.<\/p>\n<p>According to the affidavit of probable cause, Barnes-Kasson Executive Director Susan Sara Adornato alleged Canfield had acquired a controlled substance for patients, Feb. 5-10, did not properly administer the drug and the hospital question the dispensation of the narcotics.<\/p>\n<p>Canfield allegedly signed out hyrdromorphone for a patient Feb. 5 and Feb. 6 with wrong dosages and at incorrect intervals with no record in the hospital\u2019s system that the narcotics were properly disposed of or administers. The patient reported to investigators that he never received the drug while at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators allege that Canfield also dispensed the wrong doses to a patient, Feb. 9-10. According to the affidavit, she signed out double the amount prescribed for the patient and no record exists indicating what happened with remaining 1 mg of the drug at two separate times. And no record of her dispensing an additional 1 mg she had signed out for the patient.<\/p>\n<p>Barnes-Kasson has an automatic drug dispensing system \u2013 referred to as a MDG system \u2013 located in the medication room that only registered nurses have access to by using a passcode. Nurses must also enter their own, unique user name and password to access the drug dispensing system. The system also has a built-in, automatic inventory system.<\/p>\n<p>Following the dispensing of the medications for patients, the drugs are documented in the computerized \u201cmed cart\u201d system \u2013 which track which patient was administered medication, dosages, drugs that are not used and their disposal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY STACI WILSON When narcotics could not be accounted for at Barnes Kasson, hospital administrators called on the state Attorney General\u2019s office to investigate.
