For many, art is the purest form of expression – of communicating to others beyond the confines of mere conversation.<\/p>\n

Certainly, that is the case for Elk Lake senior Bethany Walters who, for her senior project, conjured a comic book reflecting her experiences with Asperger Syndrome. \u201cI\u2019ve been able to draw ever since I could pick up a pen,\u201d Walters said.<\/p>\n

\u2018Rolling Girl,\u2019 named after a Japanese pop song that Walters feels relates accurately to her \u201centire life,\u201d is more than just a school project – it is her message to the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot many people in my life know exactly how my mind works. The comic book gets the point out there that not everyone thinks the same way,\u201d Walters said.<\/p>\n

The book was created in the Japanese \u2018manga\u2019 style, or what is more commonly known in America as \u2018anime.\u2019<\/p>\n

It is a dramatic piece, based specifically on Walters\u2019 struggles throughout her life with AS.<\/p>\n

While her style is clearly rooted in her passion for Japanese culture, Walters\u2019 artistic inspiration is a product of the world around her.
\n\u201cMy inspiration is actually very varied,\u201d Walters said. \u201cMost of my inspiration is from my thoughts and my mind and the world around me, and I\u2019ve combined them to create something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pamela Staats, one of Walters\u2019 teachers at Elk Lake, has recognized the unique drive and talent in her student.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe loves it and she\u2019s very passionate about it,\u201d Staats said.<\/p>\n

To appease her seemingly insatiable urge to create, Walters is enrolled in the cosmetology school at the Susquehanna County Career & Technology Center.
\nThere, she creates a different kind of art.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s really good at applying makeup in cosmetology,\u201d Staats said.
\nWalters\u2019 focus is what is commonly known as \u2018theatrical makeup,\u2019 but she refers to it as \u2018fantasy makeup.\u2019<\/p>\n

Applying this type of makeup is uniquely challenging when compared to applying makeup for everyday or formal use.<\/p>\n

It requires extreme attention to detail as well as considering factors such as how lighting will affect the makeup, or how it will look from far away.
\nOf course, it fits right into Walters\u2019 world of animation and fantasy. In a way, her endeavors all play into the same theme – to keep creating.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can express myself through art in so many different ways, and I can do it a lot better than just speaking or writing it out,\u201d Walters said.<\/p>\n

Walters, who turns 18 this week, has high hopes to attend an art institute to focus on animation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
