PHOTO BY HEIDI ZENEFSKI<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>BY HEIDI ZENEFSKI<br \/>\nSports Correspondent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Old Man Winter has been exceptionally harsh on high school sports this season with make-up games landing on Sunday afternoons.<\/p>\n<p>A game between the Montrose boys\u2019 basketball team and Lackawanna Trail originally scheduled for Thursday night was bumped back twice because of the weather.<\/p>\n<p>The Meteors and Lions met up for the last game of the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 16, for the Montrose \u201csenior night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seniors Erik Burgh, Brenton<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12181\" style=\"width: 282px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/independentweekender.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WGSI_MON_Burgh1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12181\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12181\" alt=\"Erik Burgh (#22) scores a layup for Montrose. PHOTO BY HEIDI ZENEFSKI<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Warner, Cameron Dean, Frank Fruehan, and Codi Bendict were honored in a pre-game ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>The game was also a \u201cPlay 4Kay Pink Out\u201d event with Montrose fans wearing pink to show support for breast cancer research &#8211; part of Cameron Dean\u2019s senior project to honor North Carolina State Women\u2019s basketball coach (1975-2009) Kay Yow.<\/p>\n<p>Yow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, but still continued coaching at NC State and won an Olympic gold medal by coaching the U.S. women\u2019s basketball team in the 1988 games in Seoul, South Korea. She died of stage four breast cancer when the disease reoccurred in January 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Dean\u2019s mother, Diane, attended NC State during Yow\u2019s coaching tenure.<\/p>\n<p>Donations collected at the game, totaling about $500, will be donated to the Kay Yow\/WBCA Cancer Fund.<\/p>\n<p>Montrose took control of the game in the first quarter with all five seniors starting the game. The Meteors scored 24 points in the first eight minutes with Dean posting six points; Burgh, eight; Warner added five; Fruehan making a bucket; and Troy Ely hit a 3-pointer.<\/p>\n<p>Montrose also dominated on defense through the period. Burgh had three steals and two rebounds, Warner had four rebounds, and Dean had two.<br \/>\nThe Lions scored 11 points which came from Aiuquidan Holmes, Tyler Rzucidlo, and Ross Fauquier.<\/p>\n<p>By half time the Meteors were up 39-21 again outscoring the Lions 15-10 in the second quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Austin Smith put in five points, Warner and Jack Fruehan each scored three, and Burgh and Dean also scored for Montrose.<\/p>\n<p>Trail\u2019s ten points were scored by Rzucidlo, Fauquier, and Josh Evancavich.<br \/>\nThe Lions owned the third quarter, outscoring the Meteors 15-4. Points were scored by Rzucidlo, Fauquier, Addison Hoffman, and Steve Scioscia.<br \/>\nSloppy ball handling resulted in six turnovers to Trail in the eight minutes with only Smith and Dean each scoring one basket.<\/p>\n<p>But Montrose kept a big enough lead going into the period and were able to keep the score in their favor by seven points, 43-36, heading into the final quarter.<\/p>\n<p>The Meteors turned around and played hard in the fourth period. Ely sank two from the foul line.<\/p>\n<p>Dean made five baskets and went four for five from the foul line to add score 14 of the Meteors\u2019 16 points of the quarter. He also dominated under the basket, grabbing five rebounds for a game total of 13 rebounds and earning himself a double-double.<\/p>\n<p>The Lions scored seven points in the quarter with a 3-pointer from Fauquier, who also made a foul shot and a basket. Scioscia also added a foul shot to the Trail tally.<\/p>\n<p>The Meteors took the victory over the Lions with a final score of 59-43. PHOTO BY TOM FONTANA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In other boys\u2019 basketball action last week:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Susquehanna, 52<br \/>\nBlue Ridge, 30<\/strong><br \/>\nMark Zappe scored a game-high 22 points, 11 of which came in the first quarter, to lead Susquehanna to a 52-30 victory over Blue Ridge in a Division IV matchup Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>Josh Wheeler added 13 points and two 3-pointers for the Sabers.<br \/>\nBrad Palmatier scored 11 points to lead Blue Ridge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mid Valley, 74<br \/>\nElk Lake, 61<\/strong><br \/>\nSixth-ranked Mid Valley got a jolt from the Kenny brothers and raced past No. 3 Elk Lake, which saw its 19-game winning streak to start the season snapped, 74-61, on Monday (Feb. 10) in a Lackawanna Division III-IV crossover boys basketball game.<\/p>\n<p>Tanner Reyan led Elk Lake with 32 points and four 3-pointers, while Matt Woolcock added 15 points that included three 3-pointers.
