The number five ranked Crusaders from Holy Cross invaded Montrose Saturday intent on defeating the Lady Meteors.<\/p>\n

The Meteors were prepared to defend their home turf even though the weather kept them to practicing for three days.<\/p>\n

And Montrose defended their court, posting a 66-56 win that propelled them back into seventh place in the top ten rankings.<\/p>\n

Over the past several years these two teams have formed an intense rivalry setting up spectators\u2019 expectations for a good game with a lot of fight from both teams. Neither will go down easy nor will the winner glide to an easy win. The match-up makes for an unpredictable outcome as these two talented teams play hard right until the final buzzer.<\/p>\n

The first quarter of the game was all about Montrose. The Crusaders failed to show on the scoreboard until Gabby Giordano made a foul shot with 4:44 left, letting over four minutes go by without a single basket.<\/p>\n

The Lady Meteors were on fire with offense and defense in the first quarter, scoring 15 points, four steals, six rebounds and one blocked shot to outscore the Crusaders 15-10.<\/p>\n

Senior Myra Lattimore led the Meteors with five points in the first period.
\nDuring the second quarter the team from Holy Cross made some headway towards catching up to the Meteors.<\/p>\n

But Meghan Gilhool put up eight points, had three rebounds and two steals; while her teammate Kourtney Snigar made three out of four foul shots to keep the Meteors in front, 30-27, at the half.<\/p>\n

Second half action went back and forth making it clear that it was either team\u2019s game with six lead changes during the half.<\/p>\n

The crowd grew louder as the Crusaders took the lead briefly in the third quarter only to have it quickly snatched back a Gilhool basket.<\/p>\n

\"Junior<\/a>

Morgan Groover added 4 points of her own, three rebounds and two steals, matching Gilhool\u2019s third quarter performance.<\/p>\n

The Crusader\u2019s Giordano kept her team in the game by scoring 11 of her team\u2019s 16 points in the third quarter to outscore the Lady Meteors, 16-13, and end the quarter tied, 43-43.<\/p>\n

Once again the Crusaders stole the lead in the fourth quarter, but Groover posted big on the boards, scoring nine points – including a three-pointer, two rebounds and a steal.<\/p>\n

Giordano was shut down by the Lady Meteors in the fourth quarter only making one basket. Her Holy Cross teammates tried to fill in for her with two other Crusaders putting up three-pointers of their own, but after four lead changes, the Meteors momentum could not be stopped.<\/p>\n

Montrose outscored the stunned Holy Cross team, 23-13, in the final quarter earning the win by a score of 66-56.<\/p>\n

Coach Al Smith said, \u201cI am proud. It was a nice win. They\u2019re (Holy Cross) ranked 5th. Our girls played outstanding. I am just very proud!\u201d<\/p>\n

Gilhool led the Meteors with 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 steals; followed by Lattimore with 15 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block; Groover with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals, 1 block; and Fallon Gurn with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 1 steal.<\/p>\n

\nAt Lackawanna Trail, Nicole Rosa scored 13 points to lead Lackawanna Trail to its first win in a Division IV opener over the Sabers.
\nMikayla Hargett scored 13 points for Susquehanna and Mashawna Hargett had 12.<\/p>\n

Forest City, 63
\nElk Lake, 30<\/strong>
\nAt Forest City, Cassandra Bendyk scored 21 points to lead the Lady Foresters.
\nMadison McGraw added 13 points for the winners and Carly Erdmann had 12.
\nCasey Tyler led Elk Lake with 19 points.<\/p>\n

Mountain View, 56
\nBlue Ridge, 36<\/strong>
\nAt Mountain View, Makenna Whitaker hit four 3-pointers and scored 13 points to lead the Lady Eagles.
\nMegan Getz had 12 points for the winners and Christine Zeck added 10.
