{"id":11826,"date":"2014-01-02T19:06:29","date_gmt":"2014-01-02T19:06:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/independentweekender.com\/?p=11826"},"modified":"2014-01-02T19:06:29","modified_gmt":"2014-01-02T19:06:29","slug":"recital-puts-spotlight-on-mental-illness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenstreetdata.com\/PS\/2014\/01\/02\/recital-puts-spotlight-on-mental-illness\/","title":{"rendered":"Recital puts spotlight on mental illness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>BY STACI WILSON<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Members of the community are coming together with music to focus attention on mental health education and suicide prevention.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb Park, of Great Bend, is the organizer of a benefit recital, slated to be held Sunday, Jan. 5, 7 p.m. at the Great Bend Alliance Church, Randolph St., Great Bend.<\/p>\n<p>Park said, \u201cI think the need for mental illness education in Susquehanna County is dire. The recent tragedies in our local schools show that young people feel they have nowhere and no one to turn to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe purpose of this event is to show that is not the case,\u201d Park continued. \u201cThere are people who will help them through their situation.\u201d<br \/>\nAdmission to the recital is free but donations collected will benefit To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA), a non-profit organization dedicated to finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide.<\/p>\n<p>TWLOHA spokesperson Rachel Miller said the efforts help bring the organization\u2019s message of hope and awareness to a larger audience, \u201cEvents like this one aim to get people and their communities involved in raising awareness and funds for TWLOHA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miller added that benefit concerts help to \u201cbring these issues to light in the local area. Benefit organizers help to break the stigma associated with mental health issues and show people they are not alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recital features Park and other local vocalists performing classical and Broadway show songs.<\/p>\n<p>Performers include: Theresa Whitehead (Soprano), Amanda Rispoli (Soprano), Madison Button (Soprano), Eli Carlin (Tenor), Caleb Park (Baritone) and Andrew Granick (Tenor). Granick will also serve as the recital\u2019s host.<\/p>\n<p>Selections to be performed include \u201cWill I?\u201d from Rent; \u201cEndless Pleasure\u201d from Semele by Handel; and \u201cEmpty Chairs at Empty Tables\u201d from Les Miserables.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvisible Girl\u201d from Next to Normal will also be presented.<\/p>\n<p>Park explained Next to Normal is a show about mental illness, making the piece very relevant to the benefit cause; another piece \u201cLost in Darkness\u201d from Jekyll and Hyde also deals with mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>Refreshments will be available during the intermission and following the recital.<\/p>\n<p>For information about TWLOHA, visit twloha.com.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY STACI WILSON Members of the community are coming together with music to focus attention on mental health education and suicide prevention.
