Last year\u2019s league champions, the Montrose girls\u2019 basketball squad ended the season with a 14-10 record.<\/p>\n

Four key starters return to the court this season for the Lady Meteors Myra Lattimore, Nicki Lewis, Morgan Groover, and Meghan Gilhool.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are trying to improve throughout the year so we can a nice play-off run.\u201d says Coach Al Smith. Smith has coached the team for six years.<\/p>\n

The rest of the Lady Meteors team consists of Fallon Gurn, Angela Russell, Kourtney Snigar, Ashley Birchard, Mykayla Pike, Felicia Quinn, and Katie Warner.<\/p>\n

With a young team and a new head coach, the Elk Lake girls\u2019 basketball team will have some work to do to get back to last year\u2019s 10-13 record.<\/p>\n

Alicia Traver, an alumnus of Elk Lake High School, took over as head coach asfter serving as assistant for Dave Shingler.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was a little hesistant for it, but I had a lot of people encouraging me to take over as varsity coach,\u201d Traver said. \u201cI figured that my enthusiasm, drive to win and hard work would make up for my lack of experience. My sister Karin (Mowry) will be the junior varsity coach and the two of us have the same work ethic and idea of basketball. The girls have been responding well so far.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Lady Warriors will field a younger team this season after losing some of their standout players to graduation.<\/p>\n

\u201c(Senior) Casey Tyler has really stepped up a lot as a leader and that\u2019s one thing we\u2019ve been missing,\u201d Traver said.<\/p>\n

Joining Tyler are juniors Kenzie Jones, Sabrina Clark and Bethany Ruhf; sophomores Darci Warner, Kelly Oliver and Mikaela Pratt; and freshmen Justine Johns, Amanda Mowry, Breanna Yonkin, Whitney Tyler, Lydia Hunsinger, Julie VanEtten, Jenny Grosvenor and Kerry Jones.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t have much height either, but I think teaching hustle will make up for lack of size,\u201d Traver said. \u201cWe\u2019re gonna be young, short and quick.\u201d
\nThough Elk Lake doesn\u2019t return much experience, Traver believes that her team will remain competitive with some work as the season wears on.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we can be a good contender for the league if we work hard,\u201d Traver said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to have to do a lot of running and transition during the game. My goal is to make it to playoffs and get as far as we can from there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Traver is preparing her team with basic fundamentals during the first weeks of practice.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been going back to the basics, such as dribbling, rebounding, boxing out and layups,\u201d Traver said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to get the fundamentals in so when we have those opportunities in the game we\u2019ll be ready. Defense will also be a major focus this year.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Lady Warriors will face a tough task when they play in the Lady Tiger Tip-Off tournament to open the season.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s going to be tough,\u201d Traver said. \u201cWe\u2019ll also have our hands full with Lake-Lehman, Holy Cross and Northeast Bradford. But I\u2019d rather have a tougher schedule than an easier one. You\u2019re not going to get any better playing easy teams.\u201d<\/p>\n

Traver also tries to instill in her players that hard work will pay off on the court, and off of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking hard pays off not in just basketball but later in life,\u201d Traver said. \u201cI hope they realize that having a good wortk ethic and working a little bit harder now will pay off at the end of the season when we\u2019re making a run at playoffs.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
