This year’s Relay for Life event at Elk Lake raised more than $9,000 for the American Cancer Society: almost twice the amount set as this year’s goal.<\/p>\n

Participants set out to raise $5,419.25, or one penny more than last year’s record setting total.<\/p>\n

Elk Lake kindergarten teachers Louise Hicks and Ginger Shadduck coordinated the event. Hicks promised the elementary school’s “K Kids,” the elementary school version of the Kiwanis “Key Club,” that if they beat last year’s record for money raised, she would shave her head.<\/p>\n

Last year’s funds raised totaled $5,419.24, the most successful relay up until that point. When this year’s total topped $9,000, with more pledges due to come in over the next few days, joyous pandemonium broke out.
\n“They didn’t only beat it, they crushed it!” said event participant triumphantly.<\/p>\n

True to her promise, Hicks allowed her head to be shaved at the event in the elementary gym, and posed with survivors and relay teams afterward.<\/p>\n

\n21 cancer survivors attended the event this year, including Brooke Arnold, an Elk Lake seventh grade student battling brain tumors.<\/p>\n
