Sabers defeated in Class A

Motivated to erase his memories of last season and to keep Faith Christian’s season alive, Greg Boyd scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Lions to a 57-41 win over Susquehanna Friday night in the first round of the PIAA Class A boys playoffs atScrantonHigh School.

Led by J.D. Zamroz’s two 3-pointers, the Lions finished the first quarter on a 12-6 run, opening up a 16-13 lead.

Susquehanna (8-16) responded with a run of its own.

Providing a spark off the bench, Branden Soden keyed a 12-4 run by hitting consecutive baskets to open the second quarter. Andrzej Tom-czyk added five of his team-high 17 points, including a layup with1:48left in the half to extend Susquehanna’s lead to 25-20.

With senior Greg Boyd leading the way, Faith Christian connected on its first eight field goal attempts to start the second half and finished the third quarter shooting 78 percent from the field, outscoring Susquehanna 24-8 in the process.

From there, the Lions defense took over, pressuring Tomczyk and frustrating Susquehanna into just 6 of 20 shooting in the second half.

“I told our guys to keep their heads up,” Susquehanna coach Lawrence Tompkins said. “We did something that hasn’t been done in years here, and we just hope to build on that next year.”
