The Susquehanna Sabers couldn’t get past Lackawanna Trail’s physical defense on Friday as the Lions posted an 18-0 victory at Lions Pride Stadium.
“They were more physical then we were,” Bagnall said. “They were a much more physical team and they dominated our offensive line. That’s the bottom line. Their kids were better than our kids tonight.”
Lackawanna Trail held the Sabers to 133 yards of offense in the game and 47 of those yards came on the first play from scrimmage.
“Any time you play against coach (Dick) Bagnall’s offense, you have to be very disciplined,” Lackawanna Trail coach Steve Jervis said. “They run that offense as good as anybody. They hurt us on the first play but after that I thought we did a pretty good job containing them.”
When Susquehanna did manage to put drives together, the Lions never faltered. Three times Susquehanna drove inside Lackawanna Trail’s 20-yard line and three times was stopped on fourth down.
“The injury bug has hit us a little bit,” Jervis said. “We had some young kids in the secondary really step up.”
The Lions’ defense seemed to get stronger in the second half, allowing just one first down after halftime.
Lackawanna Trail’s offense leaned heavily on Eric Laytos and the senior running back responded with 153 yards and two touchdowns.
“Every hole was open, everyone ran hard and did their job,” Laytos said. “The linemen did a great job and I just hit the holes.”
