Montrose took possession of the football with 47 seconds left in the first half, gaining just enough ground to place kicker Matt Saravitz in striking distance for a 28-yard field goal.
The kick sailed through the uprights, putting Montrose up, 3-0, at the half.
Those were the only points scored in the annual Battle for the Bluestone with Susquehanna and Montrose took home the trophy for the first time.
Montrose Coach Lou Cella said Sarvitz worked in the offseason. “He’s been outstanding. Great job on him,” Cella said.
But a defensive battle ruled the game – led by Derek Nunez (Montrose) and Zac Conrad (Susquehanna).
Montrose’s Derek Nunez sacked Saber quarterback Kyle Donovan three times; got to quarterback six times and forced two interceptions. But on offense Nunez – who had 390 rushing yards the week prior – was held to
limited gains, earning just 14 yards on eight carries.
“Zac Conrad as unbelievable. He’s an amazing student athlete,” Cella said of the Saber senior and noted Conrad proved difficult for the Meteors to block.
Cella also praised Susquehanna’s defensive coordinator’s Carl Zukas efforts in preparing the squad for the game. “They were amazing.”
Cella said his own defense – comprised of mostly underclassmen – stepped up their play.
“By the grace of God we’re 4-1,” Cella said. “I’m humbled by the lack of offense productivity. We have a lot of work to do.”
The 3-0 victory is the first Montrose win in the annual Bluestone game, which has players from four area school districts represented on the field.

Montrose and Elk Lake play on the Meteors team; while Susquehanna and Blue Ridge comprise the Sabers’ squad.
“This win was vitally important for morale,” Cella said. “It’s an enormous win and the people of Montrose deserve it.”
Montrose is off to its best start in years. In 1998, the team was 3-1; the Meteors are already 4-1 this season.
