Independent to mark 200th

BY STACI WILSON

The Susquehanna County Independent will mark its 200th anniversary with a special, commemorative edition on Wednesday, Feb. 24.

Just six years after the formation of Susquehanna County in 1810, Justin Clark began publishing The Centinel in Montrose.

Through the years, the newspaper ownership changed, mergers occurred, and the name was changed to reflect those, leading to the present day, Susquehanna County Independent.

Over the past several weeks, the Independent’s staff and contributors have been working to bring this edition to print.

We have been working with local historical societies and organizations to provide readers with not just an edition newspaper history, but also one that reflects the rich history of Susquehanna County.

On the pages, readers can expect to see the advertisements that ran in the various newspapers, as well as old photographs, and news stories – some as they originally appeared on the newspaper pages.

The deadline for submissions to be considered for publication is Friday, Feb. 19, at noon.
