Elk Lake and Holy Cross will not only battle for league and district girls’ cross country honors, but for a state title as well.
“We’re looking forward to the year. We’re not afraid to race them,” Elk Lake coach Will Squier said. “The girls are pretty eager and pretty hungry. They’ve been working hard and have a good base underneath them.”
Elk Lake, which finished second in the state in Class A last season, returns state medalists Katie Bennett, a Times-Tribune All-Region selection, and Justine Johns. Keri Jones also returns.
Holy Cross took third in Class A last season after winning the state championship in 2013. The Lady Crusaders are led by senior Mackenzie Greenfield, last year’s Times-Tribune Girls Runner of the Year after she won the District 2 Class A title and placed fourth at the state meet. Sophomore Lexi Walsh, an All-Region selection, is also back, as are senior Zoe Haggerty and juniors Abby Guziewicz and Abby Corrigan.
Scranton Prep, which placed second in Class AA last season, will also be a force. The Classics are led by seniors Erin Feeney, an All-Region selection and state medalist, and Kate Reilly.
Other top returning runners include All-Region selection and District 2 Class AAA champion Alyssa LaFave of Wallenpaupack; state medalist Katie Dammer from Abington Heights; and state qualifiers Jennifer Korty of Forest City, Abby Haines from North Pocono and Vanessa Paolella from Delaware Valley.
North Pocono senior Matt Kravitz, the Times-Tribune Runner of the Year and a state medalist last season, headlines the boys returnees.
Dunmore senior Matt Murray is also back. Murray won the District 2 Class A title last season, was a state medalist and an All-Region selection.
District 2 Class AAA champion and state qualifier Andrew Lopez of Scranton, a senior, returns as well.
Some of the other runners to keep an eye on include state qualifiers Hunter Bedell and Cody Oswald of Elk Lake, Eric Kolvek from Wallenpaupack, Matthew Kinbeck of Lackawanna Trail and Collin Kelly of West Scranton; Conor Duffy from Valley View; North Pocono’s David Haines; Owen Brewer of Montrose; and Patrick Johnson from Wallenpaupack.
