NM proposes eliminating property tax

BY STACI WILSON

New Milford’s proposed 2015 budget eliminates property taxes in the borough if adopted by council. The one mill assessed for the fire department will continue.

At the Nov. 6 meeting, Councilman Rick Ainey said that the earned income tax levied by the borough generated more that $135,000 prior to the start of the fourth quarter of the year.

Council implemented the EIT in 2013 as a way to alleviate property taxes in the borough.

The millage for fire will average $10-$50 per household, Ainey said.

The amount generated by the EIT is about the same as the revenue that had been generated by property taxes, Ainey said.

The proposed budget has increases to support several potential projects in 2015: including a garage repair, purchase of a mower, and remodeling a park restroom facility.

The borough will also be moving forward with its comprehensive plan update. New Milford received $23,900 from the Dept. of Community and Economic Development to use toward development of the plan.
